Surgical nutrition
Why Nutrition Matters Before and After Orthopedic Surgery
Strong nutritional support is one of the most important things you can do to prepare for surgery and support your recovery, and it's entirely within your control.

ENROUTE®
ENROUTE®: a 4-week surgical nutrition program
When athletes prepare for a race, they change what they eat to support the extra strain on their body. The same holds true for surgery.
ENROUTE® is a 4-week nutrition program recommended by Dr. Perkins to support your surgical journey. It contains specialized formulas to help you prepare with targeted nutrition and recover from the operation.
Patients should consult their primary care physician before starting the ENROUTE Surgical Nutrition Program to make sure there are no contraindications based on their individual health history, medications or medical conditions.

How it helps
How ENROUTE® helps you prepare and recover
It can be hard to meet your body’s higher nutritional needs with food alone; it’s a lot of food to eat. In addition to a healthy diet, your surgeon recommends supplementing with the ENROUTE® Surgical Nutrition Program, which helps your body handle the stress of surgery and provides nutrients needed for healing.
ENROUTE® BUILD is a multi-nutrient blend that helps you maintain muscle and build strength. It’s taken two weeks before and two weeks after surgery.
ENROUTE® PREPARE is a complex carbohydrate formula taken twice the night before surgery to give your body an extra boost for the day ahead.

Frequently asked questions about surgical nutrition
Why does nutrition matter for orthopedic surgery?
Your body needs more protein, carbohydrates and key micronutrients during surgery and recovery than in normal daily life. Meeting those needs helps tissues heal, reduces the risk of complications and helps you keep the muscle strength you’ll need in physical therapy.
When should I start the ENROUTE® program?
ENROUTE® BUILD is designed to start two weeks before surgery. Your surgeon will tell you the right timing for your procedure and health history.
Do I need a prescription to order ENROUTE®?
No. You can order ENROUTE® directly at getenroute.com. Dr. Perkins recommends it as a supplement to a healthy diet, not a replacement for one.
Will nutrition really make a difference in my recovery?
Research consistently shows that patients who arrive at surgery well nourished, and keep eating well during recovery, heal more effectively and are less likely to have setbacks.
Is ENROUTE® appropriate for knee and shoulder surgery patients?
Yes. ENROUTE® is designed for orthopedic surgery patients broadly, including knee and shoulder surgery, joint replacement and ACL reconstruction. Questions about your situation? Call our team at (248) 239-5300.
Does ENROUTE® work alongside physical therapy?
Yes. Strong nutrition supports the muscle building and joint rehabilitation you do in physical therapy, helping you get more out of each session.
